THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Mainz was founded in 1476 and is one of the oldest universities in
Germany. It was re-established in 1946 and named after the city's most famous citizen,
Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. 30.000 students including 4000
foreign students from more than 120 nations are enrolled in the 19 faculties on the
campus. The university campus is located conveniently close to the city of Mainz and
offers a variety of sports and recreation facilities.
THE CITY OF MAINZ
Roman Moguntiacum, a Roman military encampment, was named after the Celtic god of light,
Mogo, 2000 years ago. Thanks to its good road and rail connections and its mild climate,
Mainz has now grown into a city of 186,000 inhabitants. The old part of the city offers
idyllic places to explore; parks and green spaces and the Rhine embankment invite you for
strolls; numerous museums and the state theatre form part of a wide range of cultural
opportunities. Peaceful, idyllic and yet not far off the beaten track: from Mainz, the
city of Frankfurt and Frankfurt Airport can be reached in just 20 minutes, and major
European cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin and Paris are only a five-hour train-ride away.
